You know the feeling, the rush of excitement the first time you see a handbag that draws you in. It’s the outward expression of your inner self being shown to the world! For more reasons than we know, accessories make us happy.  If you don’t believe me, just look around and you will see almost every woman carrying one. So how did you find that perfect one?

We first start by looking at the color, materials, price, size etc. However, nowadays we need more than that. We need a brand that we connect with the heritage of what they represent. We want to extend our personal connection beyond the design to the actual meaning of the design. A brand that takes you on a journey and aligns with your lifestyle, that is who we want to support and what shopping is all about.

I recently was introduced to a new brand, Kalamarie Handbags that is launching their first collection called Heritage. Two sisters, Meli (in NYC) and Kara (in London) sought out to create a brand based on the inspiration of their home country of Colombia. The name Kalamarie was created out of the love of the colonial city of Cartagena. Cartagena was previously known as Calamari and the sisters tweaked the spelling to accommodate it to fit with their initials, K&M. Kalamarie Handbags took influences from the door knockers to design the distinctive Kalamarie Handbags Trademark Gecko. They fused all their innovative creativity with the experience of living in the west to curate their handbags.

I got a chance to interview the owners and learn more about their stunning designs and luxurious exotic leathers.


How did you decide to start this business?

KM: As sisters, we are very close and had each gone through the experience of leaving the loving family home and our country, to set up lives overseas. One day, we were both in NYC, having lunch in a roof-top restaurant after attending a sewing and crafts course together. We were full of ideas. We started talking about home and we soon identified we both wanted to create something that would speak highly of Colombia. We kept talking and came up with the idea of leather accessories. We even shared some design ideas. We spoke for a good few hours and then set off to get drawing pads and that was pretty much the genesis of this project. That planted the seed.

What has been your greatest obstacle to overcome?

KM: Finding a manufacturer that shared our values and goals and that we could form a meaningful partnership with.

What is unique about your products?

KM: We believe we are offering a top quality product, with ethically sourced materials, at very fair prices. Crocodile is a material that will last a lifetime. It is an investment and we believe we offer the best possible rate for that investment, along with beautiful, timeless design and functionality. From a design point of view, we offer the fusion of two worlds in our designs – beautifully handcrafted materials, are made urban, but classic and sophisticated all at the same time.

We are an emerging brand of luxury goods, but more than anything, we are a family business, we want to deliver our customer the best personal experience. We come from a culture where the line between business and pleasure is blurred because there is kindness and warmth in making business. We want people to feel happy not just that they have bought a new handbag, but that they bought a Kalamarie.

What materials do you use?

KM: We use Colombian leather, Colombian crocodile, both vegetable tanned, Colombian calf leather and Italian gold-plated hardware. We do an all-croc range, made to order, in which only croc is used in the exterior, and calf leather in the lining.

What is the style of Kalamarie Handbags?

KM: Urban street style – a fusion of influences and needs reflect in the look of the Kalamarie woman. It is the woman that needs a handbag to think for her and to be tough and pretty and functional. Yet, a woman who cares about what she buys, one that searches the emerging brand, the different look, that something special. An everyday woman who is very much her own person, and distinct from the mass.


What is one thing you would like customers to know about you?

KM: We care. We do this because we love it and we want you to love it too.


What is your philosophy of life?

KM: Be alive! In every sense and sensorial way. The complex beauty of life is only truly appreciated with all senses open to the feeling. Even if the feeling is pain, be alive to it. In time, you will find even pain is beautiful in its own way.

Pantone Color of the Year 2015: Marsala


Pantone, for those of you who don’t know, is a company that works with anything and everything that has to do with color. Every year they gather a group of industry professionals to pick out which color they think will represent the upcoming year. The color for 2015 is Marsala. This color resembles a dark red wine shade. In this post, I will show you a couple of examples of how Marsala has been seen in clothing, accessories and cosmetics. This fall would be a great time to insert this color into your wardrobe. Check it out!

That’s Marsala! Do you love it?! I certainly do. If you want to test out Marsala, try painting your finger or toenails in this color to see if you like it. If your ready to try it out in your wardrobe, find a pair of Marsala skinny jeans or a trench coat, both of these items are very versatile.

Trend Alert: Metallics

From runway to street style, metallics are everywhere right now. Although, as a whole, they tend to scare some people away. They are often seen as too futuristic or fashion-forward. I often hear people say, “I don’t think I could pull that off”. You don’t have to be a trendsetter to work this trend.

If you’re a little apprehensive, you can start out small with some accessories. You could try it out at home first with a chevron striped metallic pillow. Electronic accessories like phone cases and headphones are a fun and easy way to add a little metallic to your life. If you’re feeling brave, you can even dabble in the beauty department with things like lipsticks, nail polish and temporary tattoos. A little splash of metallic can add tons of fun to your overall look.

Bags and backpacks are also a great way to join in on the trend without committing to the full look.

If you’re looking to make a bold statement, any metallic shoe will do the trick. Whether it’s a wedge, sneaker, sandal or heel, the iridescent appearance will give you that “cool” edge.

Now for the full look. If you want to, you can mix and match. Pairing a metallic skirt with a knit top will give you a cool contrast. On the other hand, if you want to dive right in, you can do a head to toe metallic look with a skirt/shirt combo or a dress. I personally love the metallic shorts and sweatshirt. They can transform your most casual outfit into an uber-trendy look.

What made you decide to start your company? 

Passion for people and the desire to work in a purpose driven company that is geared to contribute positively to our world and make a difference. My vision was to empower previously unemployed people and offer them an opportunity for skill development with the hope of restoring their dignity and assisting them to support their families.

What is your company known for or what is unique about it?

 Our mission is to bring back Hope and Dignity to previously unemployed people. We wish to distribute exceptionally beautifully hand crafted Jewelry to gifts shop and boutiques, and develop awareness and support for ethically traded products. All jewelry is not mass produced, we carry limited numbers per design. Each item is a piece of art to be treasured by customers who wear them. We want clients to feel they have stock that is something different to what is found in chain stores.


What do you enjoy most about your job?

 I’ve always had a passion for jewelry design, but never realized I would love teaching and training as much as I do. I would most certainly say that imparting of skills and knowledge to my team of previously disadvantaged women is the most rewarding part of my job.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? 

We had the great privilege of designing a necklace for Celine Dion while she was performing in Las Vegas at her show.

What would you say the hardest part of growing this business is?

 Our greatest challenge is to find Sales Representatives who are equally passionate about our cause and can ignite the same passion with store owners who wish to carry our line.

What is your daily routine like? 

We are tremendously busy and as a ‘women only team’ we have fully mastered the art of multi-tasking. The girls not only manufacture, quality control, manage and dispatch stock, they also check our social media accounts to keep in touch with our fans and followers online on a daily basis.

What is your philosophy of life?

 I believe the answer to happiness is seeking your purpose and using your talents in the area you are most passionate about. Life is an opportunity to fulfill our purpose, master skills, and ultimately to leave a legacy that contributes positively to our world.

What is your goal over the next 5 years?

 We are looking for independent Sales Representatives to carry our line in all 52 States in the USA

What is one thing that you would like people to know about this brand that they might not otherwise know? 

Our name Sapphire Dawn has a special meaning to us. The symbolism of the Sapphire is “The Fulfillment of Dreams” and “Dawn” symbolizes “New Beginnings”. By purchasing our Jewelry and Gifts, you can contribute to Fulfilling the Dreams of our Team and making New Beginnings in their lives possible.
