Insider with That Working Girl

unspecified
I got a chance to interview Lindsay from That Working Girl on all her success. Not only is she a social media guru, she runs a very successful site. We got the opportunity to learn more about That Working Girl!
Tell us about yourself, what is your personal background?

Growing up, I always knew that I had a knack for writing and wanted to someday incorporate it into my career. Fast forward to college, where I pursued a fulfilling degree in journalism and worked my way up through the ranks of our campus newspaper to serve as our Editor-in-Chief during my senior year. Upon graduating, I experienced a change of heart and dabbled in PR and advertising before landing where I am now working full-time in social media! I can honestly say that my experience trying out different areas of media was great, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m currently helping manage social media for a national brand, and it’s so funny for me to look back to three years ago when I was managing an on-campus Instagram account with 100 followers, and now I product content for an audience of over 35,000!

What inspired you to start That Working Girl?

The idea to launch That Working Girl came to me during an amazing. whirlwind trip to New York City in the spring of 2012. I had the incredible opportunity to visit Cosmopolitan magazine with a small group of handpicked students, where I got to tour the office and have a meet and greet with several key editors. While I was there, former Editor-In-Chief Kate White noted that starting a blog about what you were most passionate about was a great way to product quality content and connect with others. As soon as I hopped on my flight home I began scribbling notes (I still have them!) to begin a launch plan for That Working Girl.

Over the last 4 years the site has certainly seen its fair share of changes, and has grown along with me and my career. I can’t lie – with the pace of my professional life picking up speed it’s sometimes very difficult to keep up with a blog, but connect with and helping others is always worth it to me.

What were your goals when you created the site?

My initial goal was to help other women find fulfillment in their careers – namely through internship and job opportunity postings. At the time, I was fresh into my 20s and was hungry for any great opportunity to learn more about the media industry. That Working Girl was initially very media-focused, and has since evolved into a career and lifestyle destination.

Thatworkinggirl
How has it evolved over the years?

That Working Girl has seen several rebrands, with each blossoming into something more amazing than before! As I’ve added contributors and blog sponsors into the mix, the amount and quality of my content has picked up. I’m currently planning out content that will showcase more of my personal life, as I’ve kept most of myself hidden away and behind the scenes of the site. Now, I’m ready to share more of my personal journey and experiences!

What are some obstacles that you have had to overcome?

The biggest obstacle that I’ve had to overcome – and am still overcoming! – is finding ample time between all of my other commitments to tend to That Working Girl and regularly update with fresh content. My contributors are a huge help to me. They are all so kind and smart, and their blog contributions never cease to amaze me. Other than that, figuring out whether or not I should keep my personal and blog social media accounts separate is a big hurdle. We’ll see where that goes!

What has been your greatest accomplish thus far?

My greatest accomplishment thus far has been That Working Girl’s ability to help women and meet them exactly where they are in their career. I can’t tell you how many coffee dates and emails I’ve exchanged with strangers who turned into friends thanks to the blog. I’m so humbled every day that people come to me for my opinion and expertise, and that is exactly what challenges me to push myself and learn more each day.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I used to have a planned-out roadmap for my life, but I threw that out years ago! Honestly, in 10 years I would be over-the-moon if I was owning my own digital consulting business, with an emphasis on helping small brands grow into something mighty and amazing.

What is your philosophy of life?

I try each and every day to be helpful to others – what’s the point in working so hard if you can’t help others at the end of the day?

LaBosh- Vegan Coffee Scrub

Skincare for a Cause

LaBosh Logo 2

LaBosh_Coffee_Body_Scrub_1024x1024

Am I the only one that gets both excited and overwhelmed as I’m gazing through the beauty isles of my favorite store? I can’t be the only one that gets the urge to buy every single product. As you can probably tell, I am a lover of all things beauty, whether it be makeup, lotion, perfume, soaps or scrubs, I’m all about it. However, we have so many products thrown in our face that it’s hard to decide which one is right for us. Over the years, I have learned to do my own research to figure out what things I prefer in a beauty or skincare product. It’s important to have an idea of what you want before you head into the vast jungle of products and advertisements.

I recently came across a new body scrub by the brand LaBosh, and thought I would try it out. I had been looking for a new beauty product that would both exfoliate and moisturize my skin. Since I have sensitive skin, a product that can do both of those things and still not irritate my skin is hard to find. The different ingredients that the scrub was made out of intrigued me. The main ingredients are sea salt, avocado oil and coffee. Coffee scrubs are known to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and wrinkles. Several of these, I struggle with. On top of that, it is a natural, which is something that I always look for in a skincare product. It is also paraben free and vegan. As an animal lover, this caught my attention. I was excited to go home and exfoliate my skin with this new scrub. While I was in the shower, I applied the scrub to my trouble areas, which include my thighs and my backside. I started gently massaging the scrub onto my skin in a circular motion, like the directions said. I could immediately feel my skin awaken. For all you coffee lovers, the smell of the scrub was delicious, especially in the hot shower. After a few minutes, I rinsed it off and right away I could feel that my skin was remarkably smoother and more firm. I was blown away by the results. The next day, I couldn’t wait to take a nice warm bubble bath and try out the scrub on my feet.

Not only does LaBosh care about what goes on your skin, they also care about helping women in other ways. Portions of their profits are donated to A-21, a non-profit organization that helps women that have been sold into human trafficking be reunited with their loved ones. Beauty products that benefit a cause are beauty products that I am happy to buy.

I was able to ask the owner a few questions about LaBosh and their new Coffee Body Scrub.

What made you decide to get into the beauty business?

The decision to start offering body care products started with the frustration of seeing products on the market that are packed with harmful chemicals. We have a passion to educate the consumers on the importance of using natural ingredients.

Why did you pick a coffee scrub as your first product?

We are coffee lovers! We drink it every day! We started researching the benefits of coffee when applied topically, that is when we knew we had to do something with coffee.  Exfoliating is great for our skin. When you put coffee and salt together, amazing things happen!

What does the name La Bosh mean?

We created the name to embody our passion to Live Bold.

What makes your product stand out from the competitor’s?

Our scrub is vegan, natural, paraben free and formulated in the USA.

What is your plan to expand LaBosh?

We currently have the Coffee Scrub and plan to expand our body care assortment to offer an array of different natural products soon! We also plan to expand into natural make-up. We have a lot of exciting things coming up!

What is one thing you would like your customers to know about LaBosh?

Giving back is important to us. We have partnered with the A21 organization to help combat Human Trafficking in our world today.  We donate a portion of our earnings and with each product sold; customers are helping us fight this epidemic.

What would be one piece of advice that you would share with people who would like to start their own brand?

Anything is possible with a little research and passion.  Set a goal and then work backwards to set daily goals that will lead you to your main goal. Push through your fears, once we do that then we realize we can do anything. Those that are ok with the thought of failure are the ones that succeed in life!

Live bold and confidently with LaBosh skincare products.

Kalamarie Handbags

Heritage, the collection by Kalamarie Handbags

You know the feeling, the rush of excitement the first time you see a handbag that draws you in. It’s the outward expression of your inner self being shown to the world! For more reasons than we know, accessories make us happy.  If you don’t believe me, just look around and you will see almost every woman carrying one. So how did you find that perfect one?

We first start by looking at the color, materials, price, size etc. However, nowadays we need more than that. We need a brand that we connect with the heritage of what they represent. We want to extend our personal connection beyond the design to the actual meaning of the design. A brand that takes you on a journey and aligns with your lifestyle, that is who we want to support and what shopping is all about.

Kalamarie handbags 5

I recently was introduced to a new brand, Kalamarie Handbags that is launching their first collection called Heritage. Two sisters, Meli (in NYC) and Kara (in London) sought out to create a brand based on the inspiration of their home country of Colombia. The name Kalamarie was created out of the love of the colonial city of Cartagena. Cartagena was previously known as Calamari and the sisters tweaked the spelling to accommodate it to fit with their initials, K&M. Kalamarie Handbags took influences from the door knockers to design the distinctive Kalamarie Handbags Trademark Gecko. They fused all their innovative creativity with the experience of living in the west to curate their handbags.

I got a chance to interview the owners and learn more about their stunning designs and luxurious exotic leathers.

kalamarie-sophisticated-croco-leather-whith-calf-skin-handbags-accessories-holiday-15-josephine-cognac

How did you decide to start this business?

KM: As sisters, we are very close and had each gone through the experience of leaving the loving family home and our country, to set up lives overseas. One day, we were both in NYC, having lunch in a roof-top restaurant after attending a sewing and crafts course together. We were full of ideas. We started talking about home and we soon identified we both wanted to create something that would speak highly of Colombia. We kept talking and came up with the idea of leather accessories. We even shared some design ideas. We spoke for a good few hours and then set off to get drawing pads and that was pretty much the genesis of this project. That planted the seed.

What has been your greatest obstacle to overcome?

KM: Finding a manufacturer that shared our values and goals and that we could form a meaningful partnership with.

 Kalamarie handbags 4

What is unique about your products?

KM: We believe we are offering a top quality product, with ethically sourced materials, at very fair prices. Crocodile is a material that will last a lifetime. It is an investment and we believe we offer the best possible rate for that investment, along with beautiful, timeless design and functionality. From a design point of view, we offer the fusion of two worlds in our designs – beautifully handcrafted materials, are made urban, but classic and sophisticated all at the same time.

We are an emerging brand of luxury goods, but more than anything, we are a family business, we want to deliver our customer the best personal experience. We come from a culture where the line between business and pleasure is blurred because there is kindness and warmth in making business. We want people to feel happy not just that they have bought a new handbag, but that they bought a Kalamarie.

What materials do you use?

KM: We use Colombian leather, Colombian crocodile, both vegetable tanned, Colombian calf leather and Italian gold-plated hardware. We do an all-croc range, made to order, in which only croc is used in the exterior, and calf leather in the lining.

What is the style of Kalamarie Handbags?

KM: Urban street style – a fusion of influences and needs reflect in the look of the Kalamarie woman. It is the woman that needs a handbag to think for her and to be tough and pretty and functional. Yet, a woman who cares about what she buys, one that searches the emerging brand, the different look, that something special. An everyday woman who is very much her own person, and distinct from the mass.

What is one thing you would like customers to know about you?

KM: We care. We do this because we love it and we want you to love it too.

What is your philosophy of life?

KM: Be alive! In every sense and sensorial way. The complex beauty of life is only truly appreciated with all senses open to the feeling. Even if the feeling is pain, be alive to it. In time, you will find even pain is beautiful in its own way.

Kalamarie Handbags is fusion of elegant and sophisticated silhouettes with a touch of urban unique flair!

My Interview with a Fashion Intern

internship

This weekend I had the opportunity to interview one of my closest friends and fellow college student, Audrianna Lyles. She is currently doing her summer internship with a fashion design team in New York City. I thought it would be great to hear and share what she has to say about finding an internship in a big city and what all she has learned so far. Enjoy!

What made you want to do an internship in NYC?

AL: It has always been a top goal of mine, ever since I began college. Having that NYC Design internship was a mini dream for myself.

How did you find it? Was it hard to find?

AL: I found this internship on internships.com, and no it was not hard. I actually was just trying to get any internship, but my prayers were answered and I ended up with an amazing internship with a growing brand.

How did you find the money to afford living in NYC for the summer?

AL: I worked hard over the holiday, and did a lot of fundraising and saving. I also got generous donations from family/friends and members from my church.

How did you find short-term housing?

AL: From the fashion study tour that I did with TTU last summer, the agency that did our tours emailed us all a list of internships and summer housing options. Then I went from there going down the line of places until I found the best one for me.

What is your internship all about? What is the brand?

AL: My internship is all about design, and working with the design team at ELOQUII.

What does your typical day look like?

AL: Depends on the week, we have photoshoot weeks and regular weeks I guess you can say and as an intern you experience both. My days start at 9 every morning. I wake up and run to the nearest coffee shop. Funny right… but sometimes you need that pick me up to get you ready for a busy day. Then I make it to the studio and the games begin, sometimes there are mini projects like filtering the samples or the color samples. Attending meetings, and even watching the start of a new collection. Since this is a fast fashion company, the design process is on rotation all the time. New things, new people, and loads of fun.

What is the most important thing that you’ve learned so far?

AL: That’s a hard question. To be honest the real world design experience has been a major eye opener and I believe that has been the most important thing. Actually seeing and doing what I’ve been telling myself for years that I wanted to do.

What has been your biggest challenge?

AL: My biggest challenge has been sketching on Illustrator. I am a paper and pencil kind of girl so I have had to get used to making a tech packet in a technical way.

What has been your favorite part so far?

AL: My favorite part so far has been observing the beginning of the design process and seeing how a collection starts and finishes. I am able to see what it really takes and experience things that are not taught in our classes.

What advice do you have for other students wanting to do an internship in the big city?

AL: I would say just to be brave and know that you can do it. With complete honesty I was extremely nervous and scared, but I kept going. Eventually I thought to myself, this is an experience that will make many memories. I knew that I would have been so mad at myself if I had chickened out.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

AL: Hopefully on a design team while working on my skills and networking with people and fully experiencing the industry. This all will help me to achieve my ultimate dream of having my own fashion brand.

Special thanks to Audrianna for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer these questions for me. If you are looking for an internship, like Audrianna said, you can go to Internships.com and browse the options available. If you want to know more about Audrianna and her experiences as a design intern, check out her blog. Thanks for reading!

Love’illy Gourmet Baking

So you’re like me, you have aspirations of becoming a gourmet baker. The problem is you have no clue where to begin. Or you might be the person who knows something about baking but don’t have the hours available it takes to bake from scratch. However great your experience may be in the kitchen (or in my case none), most of us want to be able to cook comfortably for friends and family, have the food be satisfying and nourishing, and most of all taste great!

cPjm-vEBX2jnJPmfV-tG-NxsUTJN5pfUcNsWNiYF2pc,SuOMEFdpGisY4YDJ3_dSBZdHzTz58rav1IWX4WHjBjk

It’s often said that baking is an art, you either have the talent or not.  Well in today’s food industry that’s no longer the case. Large Companies and small start-ups are now recognizing the needs of consumers and providing them with easy-to-use ingredients and foods that help anyone cook like a pro. Who doesn’t love that? This gets people like me excited about being in the kitchen and the possibilities about what I might be able to cook- no stress, fail-proof ingredients, good food, happy people, yes please!

So what are these new food trends and products that will make life easier?  What product will provide us with all the ingredients and tools necessary to become a gourmet baker? Well one of these hot new trends is Love’illy. Their line of gourmet pie mixes combine the tradition of baking with innovation. Yes, even a novice baker like myself can now turn out a traditional yet gourmet fruit pie…like grandma used to make but even better!

Love’illy is a line of gourmet pie mixes, made with no chemicals, preservatives or gluten. These all-in-one dry baking mixes combine a custom blend of aromatic spices, real sugar and gluten free thickener that makes for an easy-to-use pie mix- essentially a fruit filling starter. By simply adding Love’illy Gourmet Pie Mix to fresh or thawed fruit, pouring it into a pie shell (or any pastry for that matter) and baking, your guaranteed a perfectly thickened, wonderfully flavored fruit pie. It’s like a cake mix but for pie, there’s nothing like it. Now isn’t your mouth watering?

TRL_pI_gvqQgxkou73QNMy4XHiAB_bmrai4Arvtx2jY

I got a chance to interview the owner of Love’ illy, Sydney.  She explains the goal of Love’illy to bring ease and sophistication to homemade baking and entertaining. As well as, how the brand grew organically in her kitchen, from hours spent cooking and creating her own recipes. Let’s learn more about her journey and her amazing products!

What inspired the name Love’illy?

SB: The name Love’illy was inspired by my love of cooking for friends and family. It’s the thoughtfulness and pleasure one takes in preparing food for loved ones.  Cooking is an extension of yourself- an offering if you will, that says ‘this gift is for you, please savor and enjoy, and leave satisfied and nourished.’ There’s no better way to enjoy the company of others than to sit around the dinner table and enjoy home cooked food.

What is unique about Love’illy?

SB: Our fruit filling starter is handcrafted in small batches with gluten-free thickener, real sugar and fresh fragrant spices which makes baking fruit filled desserts effortless. There’s no other product out in the mainstream market that helps people make delicious and natural fruit filling; the only other options are canned fillings which have loads of sugar (not even real sugar), very little fruit and poor fruit quality. There are plenty of pre-made pie doughs available but there aren’t any filling options- that’s where I saw a need and created a product. I mean the filling is just as important as the crust!

How did you decide on what flavors to make?

SB: I’m a food lover. Wherever I go and whatever I do I have to sample local cuisine. That passion for flavor and unique ingredient combinations is what inspired me to develop the line of Love’illy flavors. When deciding what fruit pie mixes to make I began by focusing on the most popular fruit pies and what spices would be complementary yet distinctive.

I knew my line of gourmet pie mixes had to include apple, blueberry, peach and cherry- these are all classics in their own right. Each ingredient in the mix had to complement the fruit first and foremost. The fruit had to be the star of the show, with all other ingredients subtlety in the background.  The foundation to all of my recipes and flavors includes a balance of sweet, tart, warm and salty elements.  This balance of flavor creates a complex, satisfying and well composed recipe.

For someone that has never baked before, is it a product made for a beginner?

SB: For the person that’s not as comfortable in the kitchen and intimidated by baking, using Love’illy is a great option. There’s no need to worry about your pie turning out runny or lacking flavor or making sure you have a pantry filled with the right ingredients. By picking out your fruit, making or buying pie dough, and your favorite Love’illy mix, you can effortlessly make a gourmet dessert in minutes- mix, pour, and bake! So simple!

For the person that’s an experienced or frequent cook, Love’illy is great because it saves time and is an extraordinary dessert that never fails to impress. Most of us don’t have 2 hours to make one dessert and using Love’illy is a way to make a homemade dessert in minutes. It’s semi-homemade cooking at its finest.

How has being a business owner changed your life?

SB: I’ve learned a lot throughout the process. From concept and development to the creation of a sellable product the journey has taught me that I’m resilient, and that creativity, perseverance and being nice to others will get you far.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

SB: In the next 5 years I see the Love’illy brand expanding with the addition of various flavors and products. Short term, I hope Love’illy continues to gain consumer and industry recognition and is carried in more large and small specialty grocery and retail stores across the U.S.

What is your philosophy in life?

SB: Where there is a will there is a way. This is my mantra because I started this company with no industry experience or connections and hardly any money. I entered into a very difficult and expensive field as an underdog. It’s taken years to develop and design Love’illy and at each stage there have been challenges that could have easily made me want to throw in the towel.  Whether it was people doubting my ability, logistical issues or distributors and buyers not wanting to take a chance on the product because it wasn’t familiar (i.e. another hot sauce or flavored mustard), I’ve always believed I could make it happen, and when one path ends another can be created.  You just have to have faith.

Pq6eoIO-vZOrhfGDFDpSNsrdxNpLFc1GTx6w4GYQ4Uc,wvosWKmZGvBjIuRcBHvp0vjQOTiaVAd6JaQJICZ9s6Y

By using Love’illy there’s no need for a recipe or handfuls of ingredients- it’s all included in the mix. What more could you ask for?!

Highlights from Expo West

Highlights from Expo West

Expo West is one of the largest expos for the natural product industry. The organic/vegan lifestyle is becoming a huge movement on our culture. Wholesalers and buyers from around the world come together for this weekend event. This was my first time attending this expo and I must say, I was extremely impressed. Having been to several different types of expo/tradeshow events over the years, I consider this one top notch for this industry.

For a first time buyer attending the show, it could feel a bit overwhelming. However, the key to navigating through this event is to first look at the layout/map and find the category that you are shopping for. Fashion is the most visible way to speak to the world without having to say a word! Within just a few seconds, you can tell a lot about a person by what they are wearing. An inner reflection of an outward expression is what fashion represents. So what do you represent? Who do you support and why? We all know what we like; yet some of us do not feel comfortable enough to fully let ourselves be authentic. Let’s challenge ourselves this year to let our inner being shine through in our clothes!

Speaking of shine, Stelari is a new boho chic active wear and lifestyle brand that embodies a unique effortless style.  Stelari’s first season in active wear debuts with the “Tarot of the Bohemians” collection.  TarotoftheBohemians-Bus-Vertical-WEB (2)

I was pleased to get a chance to interview the owner, Kim Roach on this new exciting brand.

What made you decide to start Stelari?

KR: There was never a decision to start Stelari because it always lived in my heart. I feel my most authentic and best self when I am active and creating, so it was only natural to marry the two.

Did you have a background in fashion?

KR: My undergraduate degrees are in Marketing and Finance. After graduating college I sought out to work in fashion but found it extremely difficult to break into the industry, especially in the city I was living in. I am an entrepreneur at heart and have been creating businesses since I was a child. I always knew I would create my own brand. When my kids were old enough to start pre-school I began my journey to Stelari. I basically started over – attending fashion design classes and gaining a deeper knowledge of the industry. Creating a line that embraced my love of fashion, yoga and fitness is the clearest extension of who I am at my core and the essence of my life.

GypsySoul-KimProfile (2) (659x1000)

What does the word Stelari mean?

KR: Stelari is an abstract word my mind kept saying whenever I would think about life and my connection with others. When we listen to our intuition and live a conscious life that is authentic and meaningful to our unique selves, we are in the rhythm of life. This is how I strive to live my life and I want to inspire others to do the same. Stelari – find your rhythm.

What is the inspiration behind this Tarot of the Bohemians collection?

KR: This collection was inspired by the ancient wisdom and symbolism of the Tarot. I am constantly in awe and inspired at the way life and the Universe communicates with each of us, if we are conscious and quiet enough to listen. For me, the message of this collection, is the we are all our own fortune tellers and we create our destiny with every thought, word, action and non-action.  Our lives on the outside are simply a reflection of our inside.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

KR: Being creative! The early mornings are my “me” time. There is something very sacred about the creative energy of the morning- when my mind, body, and soul are refreshed and there is serenity around me. This is when I get most of my creative inspirations. It is truly one of the most fulfilling things to have a vision, to see it actualized, and to find that others connect with its meaning.

How is your brand different?

KR: Stelari is unique from other brands because the apparel we create is designed to be meaningful, functional, and fashionable. Our clothes are pieces of artwork – each design symbolizes our core values and the intention of the person wearing it.

Who is the Stelari girl?

KR: The Stelari woman believes in her own powerful being. She’s curious about life. She loves connecting with people just as much as she enjoys silent walks alone. She’s a hard worker and a fun seeker. She’s creating a purposeful life and believes all her dreams can come true.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

KR: Striving to always follow my own truth, popular or not.

9ofWandsYMT-JoshuaTree-StelariLogo (2) (659x1000)

What would you say the hardest part of growing a new business is?

KR: Balance! I have a 5 and 7 year-old, and at times it can be difficult being a mom, an entrepreneur, a yogi and a wife. Striving to balance and fulfill all my roles is a challenge that I believe we all face at one time or another. The key, I found, is to stay focused on my purpose and my intention.

What is your daily routine like?

KR: I usually wake up around 5am to enjoy a couple hours devoted to creativity and spirituality. For me, these two things are deeply intertwined. If I have a busy day of meetings, I try to get in an early morning run.  At 7am the kids wake. After getting them off to school, I drive to my favorite local yoga studio. A daily practice is sacred to me and I strive to preserve this time for myself. The rest of my day is spent working on my line, responding to emails and general business operations.  In the afternoon, I pick up my kids from school and we begin our own routine. It’s busy, but it’s exactly the life I wanted and created, and I am so thankful for it.

What’s your philosophy of life?

KR: I believe that our life’s greatest purpose is to let our soul be seen. When we connect to the deeper part of ourselves, the Universe, and each other, we can begin to shed the layers and let our most beautiful, fragile and vulnerable self be seen.

 GypsySoul-JoshuaTree-Meditation (2) (1000x667)

You can see Stelari’s new collection at: www.Stelari.com. Don’t forget to check out the amazing yoga towels as well!

Finding our rhythm to life looks different for everyone that is why it is your rhythm, not someone else’s. Be unique, be bold, be you!
